Permit Inspections

Who can use this feature?

Firms with access to Permit Inspections

Purpose

MetaField’s Permit Inspections feature makes it easy to perform and monitor inspection work across your projects. Your firm can use it to:

  • Quickly assign inspection tasks with permit details
  • Define jurisdiction requirements for consistent reporting and compliance
  • Visualize inspection work in real-time (Inspections Overview home screen tile)

This article will show you how to set up Permit Inspections in your MetaField environment.

Note: Permit Inspections is an add-on feature. If you can't access these areas, contact your system administrator or contact us to get your firm signed up!

Permit Inspection Workflow

Step 1. Jurisdiction & Inspection Setup (Admin Module)
  • Navigate to the Jurisdictions page (Admin > General > Jurisdictions)
  • Click Add Jurisdiction to create new jurisdictions (counties, cities, etc.)
  • Click your new jurisdiction to select and highlight it
  • Click Add Inspection to create new Inspection types for the selected jurisdiction

This step lets you define inspections based on each jurisdiction’s unique reporting standards.

You can also assign inspections to a discipline (like Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, etc.). Grouping inspections by discipline makes it easy to select them when scheduling (see Step 3 below).

Step 2. Permit Setup (Projects Module)
  • Navigate to the Permits page (Projects > Specifications > Permits)
  • Select your project and click Add Permit
  • Input permit number, name, description, etc.
  • Optional: Assign your permit a discipline
  • Click your new permit to select and highlight it
  • Click Add Associated Permit to add related permits

This step allows you to create permits for each project, which your team can then log inspections against.

You can also assign a discipline to your permits (e.g., Electrical, Plumbing, etc.). Grouping your permits by discipline makes it easy to select the right inspections for them when scheduling (see Step 3).

Step 3. Scheduling Inspection Work (Schedule Module)
  • Click Add Work Order (Scheduling)
  • Select your inspection work item(s)
  • Choose a permit and inspection in their respective columns
  • Finish and save or submit the work order

When you select a permit with a discipline, you will only see inspections matching that discipline. This makes it easy to select the right inspection without scrolling through a generic list.

Example: Both the permit and selectable inspections shown below have been assigned to the “Roofing” discipline. Note that only the two related inspections appear for selection.

If you haven't associated your project with a jurisdiction yet, you won’t see the option to select a permit or inspection.

Step 4. Completing Inspection Work (Field Module)
  • Access My Assignments (Field > My Assignments)
  • Select the assigned inspection under New Assignments
  • Review the pre-filled permit details and adjust values as needed
  • Record inspection results and add Inspection Notes
  • Complete and submit the assignment

This keeps inspection work fast, accurate, and aligned with the reporting standards of the permit and jurisdiction.

Step 5. Reviewing & Reporting Inspections (Review & Deliver Modules)
  • Access the Inspections tile on your Home page (Home > Tile Library)
  • Use the search to filter to a single project
  • Review the project’s inspections by status:
    • Opened: Inspection added to project but not assigned to a form record yet
    • In Progress: Inspection was done in the field and submitted for review
    • Results: View results of submitted and approved inspections
      • Each inspection can be assigned a status by the reviewer: Pass, Partial Pass, Fail, or Cancelled
  • Click the In Progress tab to find and open the inspection in Review
  • Edit, preview, and finalize the form
  • Open the Review module to review and adjust the form as needed
  • Use the on-page commands to deliver the report, via Email, Publish, etc.
